South Omaha Historical Tour

Cultural and Historical Tour “Visita al Barrio"

The purpose of Cultural & Historical Tour "Visita al Barrio" is to promote the South Omaha area. This program by bus tours showcases South Omaha as a hard working community that is trying to develop itself and welcomes the investment of the traditional communities of Omaha.

Also, we educate our visitors regarding cultural differences and on the error of believing stereotypes. We help them to understand how the Latino community is growing and show them the richness of the Latino culture.

Cultural & Historical Tour "Visita al Barrio" has the following goals:

  • To bring visitors to South Omaha
  • To promote Diversity
  • To help the traditional community understand the Latino culture
  • To promote commerce between communities
  • To break South Omaha Stereotypes
  • To promote South Omaha as a business community
  • To promote development of the community as a whole.

Look for the scheduling of the Tour "Visita al Barrio" in the calendar of events on the MLCDC’s Website.

History of Cultural and Historical Tour “Visita al Barrio"

The genesis of this project was in September 2008 after discussions with several business people. Yesenia Wilson, who was coordinating September events as a volunteer for a non-profit organization, came to the conclusion that the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration lacked of participation from the traditional community, due to the different stereotypes for visiting South Omaha.

In 2009, the South Omaha Cultural and Historical Tour, "Visita al Barrio" was a pilot project for 2010.In this event, small business owners and various companies supported the project and participated on it.

In 2010, it was found that the original collaborator and Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation (MLCDC) had a shared vision for the Tour and as a team they looked for a plan to enact that vision. As a community, it is necessary that we celebrate our accomplishments and help to promote this to the community at large. This cultural and historical event helps break down stereotypes and misconceptions; and also helps the integration between communities.
